Fellow DCYC Sailors,
The coming
sailing season again offers the hope and promise of an enjoyable summer on
the lake at Deep Creek Yacht Club. Our club continues to operate
financially in the black, and we benefit greatly by everyone’s efforts to
help operate and maintain the club. We finished a variety of improvements
last year, such as new windows in the back of the kitchen (thanks Dave and
Frank), new beer cooler and bar floor (thanks, Bob), improved parking lot
drainage, and a new dock section (thanks, John). This year plans are
afoot to upgrade the Ward Room, replace old windows on the front of the
kitchen, replace leaky gutters on the main building, add storage for
sails, and make repairs to our docks.
Speaking of the
docks. Please note that we need volunteers to help on Docks Repair Day,
April 12. Docks-In-Day is April 19; a bit early, but Eugene Shreve cannot
come on April 26. Docks chair, Don Crawford, will also be in touch with
you about these events. The club Clean-Up Day is May 10, and we need
everyone to pitch in to make the club and grounds look their best so we
can better relax and enjoy the sailing season.
You may have
heard that the Deep Creek Lake Sailing Association, Inc. has received
approval from the state of Maryland to use the trade name “Deep Creek
Yacht Club at Turkey Neck.” We have requested that they always use this
name in full, including “at Turkey Neck”, so as to help avoid confusion
between the two clubs. Unfortunately, there probably will be confusion
among people who are not aware there are two different yacht clubs on the
lake. With such a similar name to ours, many people will not even realize
the difference and assume that Deep Creek Yacht Club (us) is just a
contraction of Deep Creek Yacht Club at Turkey Neck. We will all have to
do our best to educate people about the difference.
Currently, Jess
Hopkins, Marie Potts-Deakin, and Debbie Spinnenweber are working on a “New
Members” brochure that will be available for the coming year. We will be
asking all members to help put brochures in the hands of prospective
members. To help in recruiting new members, the Board recently approved a
reduced one-year rate of 50% for Trial Member dues.
Enclosed with this letter you should find:
1.
2008 Operating Schedule.
2.
2008 List of officers and committee membership.
3. 2008 Social Schedule – another
full schedule of fun events. Thanks to Charlotte Hott for putting this
together.
Happy
sailing this summer, and may all your racing opponents approach you on
port tack.
Best Regards,
Tom
