The sailing weeks run from Monday through Friday
The sailing weeks will run from Monday through Friday starting each day at 9:30 am and ending at 4:00 pm. These sailing weeks will be held at
the Deep Creek Lake Sailing Association (Turkey Neck Yacht Club, 204 Yacht Club Rd.) and are open to everyone. The sailing school does not
discriminate.
Adult Weeks: We will cover beginning sailing for participants without experience, or those with very little experience. Capsize
demonstrations will be included. More experienced sailors will learn the use of the spinnaker and the basics of sailboat racing. If you own a Flying Scot
we encourage you to use it for the sailing week; if you do not, we will provide boats. We encourage couples to sign up together but we welcome
singles too. Sometimes, mom, pop, and older children sign up together.
Junior Weeks: These weeks are for youngsters of all ages and experience. New/smaller kids will sail Optimist Prams; more experienced/bigger kids
will sail Lasers with our shorter rig. The week will start with capsize drill, rigging and derigging, continue through on-the-water
instruction, knot-tying, and progress to racing for the more advanced sailors and free sails and group "cruises" and cruising picnics for everyone. This
year we have a minimum age limitation of 8 for the junior programs. All juniors must be swimmers. We will test this by having the junior
sailors swim 50 yards and stay afloat, in place, for 10 minutes. All junior sailors must wear life jackets at all times on or near the water.
Parents must execute a medical release form which has been included. All participants will need to bring a bag lunch and everyone needs to wear
some kind of sailing, tennis, or swim shoes. Since it can be quite cool at Deep Creek even in the summer, we suggest that all participants have
a dry clothing change along. Don't forget sun screen.
Laser Advanced: Enrollment for this teenage week is limited by age, experience, and the number of Lasers available. Students are encouraged
to bring their own Laser if possible. We will have three more used Lasers available this season, and we have purchased five new 4.7 Laser
sails.
Certified instructors Gary Schubert, Ed Peters, and Ryan Schubert have agreed to return .Scot Parry, an intern last year will also become a
certified instructor. Carrie Dodd and Justin Burnham will be on hand part time. Several younger sailors will be on hand as interns. Dave
Mahan, Ray Miller, Joan Coraor, and Frank Vandall are available as certified instructors as needed.
These sailing courses are aimed at providing a fun experience for the participants; children who have gone through earlier courses have had a
good time, made new friends, and learned to sail. All youngsters will receive a Sailing School cap and an award at the end of the week. Skill
badges will be awarded to those who earn them. Tee shirts will be available for purchase at $12 each. Extra caps are $7 each.
Each junior sailing week will have a maximum of 16 sailors. The adult week size will depend on the number of sailboats brought by the
students and the distribution of experience in the class. If you have a specific week in mind get your application with a tuition check to us as quickly
as possible. In past years some of the weeks were filled by May. If you are registering more than one junior sailor or have friends who want to
register, just make additional copies of the Application Form and Medical Form. Please submit a separate form for each junior. We are
also requesting Medical Forms for adults. Adults will also have a swim test, similar to the one for children.
The tuition rate for the pre-planned weeks will be $235 per person for the week. Students bringing their own Flying Scot or Laser to the
school get $50 per boat discount. We plan to provide private lessons, weekdays only, at $175 per day or $115 for the half day. We have Start Sailing
Right, a beginning text from U.S. Sailing, available to all students at $15 per copy.
In 2005 for the first time we had to turn children away because we were really full, at the same time several families reserved a place, but
did not pay or attend. Therefore this year we will hold telephone reservations for a maximum of two weeks without payment. We already
have eleven students paid, and six with phone reservations. Telephone reservations made this winter should be paid by April 15, 2007.
Wednesday Evening Racing: Again this year, Wednesday evening races sponsored by DCYRA will be run by the Sailing School beginning June 20
through August 29 The short race or races will start at 5 PM, prior to the regular club pitch-in and will be conducted in front of the Turkey
Neck club. They will be free and are offered to club or DCYRA members and registered students.
