March 2006
Sailors, Junior Sailors,
Friends, Parents, and Grandparents,
We have already had
inquires about our 2006 sailing program. For your planning purposes we
have set the following schedule for the 2006 Deep Creek Sailing School
program:
Classes beginning week
of:
The
sailing weeks will run from Monday through Friday, starting at 9:30 AM and
ending at 4:00 PM. These sailing weeks are group lessons which will be
held at the Turkey Neck Yacht Club. The sailing programs are open to
everyone. The school does not discriminate. Because most children seem to
want to come in late July and August, we are putting two adult weeks at
the beginning. In the past we have had adult beginner and adult
intermediate, but we have found that most adult students have similar
abilities. During adult weeks, on the water lessons will be geared to each
students ability. We know that families are limited to certain dates, and
we will no longer have separate weeks for beginners and more advanced
juniors, but will divide the children into two groups by ability and
experience each week. The exception will be the week of July 17. Last
year, by chance we had one week with all experienced teenagers. They all
sailed Lasers and had a great time. We would like to continue that this
year. Enrollment for this week will be limited by age, experience, and the
number of Lasers we have available. Students are encouraged to bring their
own Laser when possible.
You will receive
detailed information in early April 2006 along with the application form.
Tuition for the regularly scheduled classes will be $235 per student for
the week. Beginning and intermediate juniors will sail eight foot Optimist
Prams or Lasers with short rig. More advanced children will sail Lasers
with the short or full rig depending on their weight and ability. The
junior program will no longer accept children less than 8 years of age and
then only if they are good swimmers. Adult instruction for beginners or
intermediate will normally be in Flying Scot sailboats. Most of the
instructors including Ed Peters, the Schuberts, and the Dodd girls who
were with us last year will be returning. Lucy is exploring other options,
but may be back for one more year. Meredith Dodd, who organized the award
pins last year, will be head instructor.
Last year, for
the first time, we had to turn children away because we were really full,
at the same time several families reserved a place, but did not pay or
attend. Therefore this year we will hold telephone reservations for a
maximum of two weeks without payment. We will accept telephone
reservations this winter, but will only hold them for two weeks after we
mail out applications in the spring.
This year we will
again be offering private lessons Monday through Friday. The cost will be
$175 for one to three participants for a full day of sailing in a Flying
Scot with an instructor. Half day lessons will be $115, the same rate as
last year.
Wednesday evening
races will be provided for all interested sailors beginning at 5 PM during
July and August. These will be sponsored by the Deep Creek Yacht Racing
Association, and run by Sailing School personnel. We hope to see you and
your family next summer. If you have any questions about our program
