March 2005
Dear Fellow Sailors and Friends of Sailing,
As the ice slowly melts on the lake we eagerly look forward to another season
of racing!
Dues Notice
Attached herewith is the annual Application & Dues notice. You will be
happy to know that there are NO increases in the dues for 2005. As
always, you must be paid up in order to be scored and eligible for a trophy.
Please remit your dues promptly to Barbara Griffin.
Radial Rigged
Lasers
We have made a slight modification to our Sunday schedule to try a new program
for Radial Rigged Laser sailors. Ray Gauthier will run a series of short
course races on Sunday mornings beginning at 11:00 for anyone interested in
this format. We hope this will appeal to Juniors and interested women
sailors, and help enlarge our Junior program. Our normal long racecourses have
proved to be too tedious for our younger and lighter racers. Our
regular Sunday racing will now begin at 2:00 PM instead of 1:00 PM.
Comet
Internationals
Our racing venue on Deep Creek Lake has attracted INTERNATIONAL attention.
The Comet Class has asked if they could be accommodated to hold their
International Regatta on our lake on the weekend of September 24/25. We
can be proud to be selected to hold this type event. Fortunately the
time frame was convenient for our clubs.
Trophies
Our trophy Mistress Joan Coraor has been working hard to once again provide a
wonderful selection of sailing trophies for distribution to worthy
participants. She will be introducing a new idea for your interest.
Sad News
We note the untimely passing of Jack Carpenter. A close colleague of
mine at Westinghouse and occasional sailing partner, Jack and I would spend
hours on Monday mornings discussing the races, the fleet administration and
the lake (on Westinghouse time naturally) He was a keen competitor and hard to
beat. He stopped sailing pretty much on DCL in 1996 when he got a
well-deserved promotion to go to NY to be the VP of Taxes at Viacom. He
will be missed. We give our profound sympathy to Marilyn and the family.
